Solar Printing :

This  is done on a polymer plate ( with a thin metal backing) which is Ultra Violet light sensitive. The image can be made on transparent film & then clamped to the plate while it is exposed to the sun or other ultra violet light source. The advantage for my purpose was that by doing a second exposure with a very fine dotted screen, a really strong all-over tone can be obtained. This provided the necessary tonal gap between the sky & the clouds.

Mono Printing :

This is a  direct method, in which an impression is taken from a source which has been covered in ink. In this case I used grasses & leaves for the trees & bushes, & cut-out card for buildings. In each case these were then impressed directly on to the finished solar print of the sky.

Chine Colle :

A piece of coloured paper is placed over part of the etching plate before covering with the damped printing paper. When passed through the press, the two papers fuse together & some of the image is printed on the coloured part .In this case I painted the colours with acrylic on the cut out butterflies & then the veins were added from the etching on the plate as it went through the press.
